MS11: Week 1 Check In

I have no idea where I've been for the past month or so. I've been pluggin' along as far as nutrition and exercise goes. Persistence. Persistence. Persistence. I've just dropped off the blog planet, apparently. Well, I'm back now and I've posted quick entries just to catch me up. I'll try to get back on schedule here, too.

For some reason I can't explain, I've lost more weight in the past 6 days than I did in the whole entire prior milestone. I really don't feel like I've changed much in my plan. My food is about the same. Not only the same quantities but mostly the same foods too! My exercise is basically the same. I'm still doing the 3 weight training days and 2 "cardio" days. There have been two variations to my exercise but I just have a hard time believing they made that much of difference.

First, I got two new step aerobic tapes. One of which I think is OK -- Kathy Kahler. I'll probably like it more as I get more comfortable with it. The other one bugged me on so many levels I actually returned it. Let's see, the music was too quiet or the instructor is too loud. One of the two. The routine seemed "off" to me. Like in a step where other tapes/DVDs would have you raise your arms on the step up, this one was opposite. Raise them on the way down. But, worst of all, the music must have been dubbed in after the fact. So, there are times when the instructor wasn't "on the beat". That totally threw me off. And, finally, the DVD was poor quality. About two or three times in the 45 minute work out, it would just freeze. I tried it twice and every thing I mentioned above was the same. So, back it went. I bought a different new one (Gin Miller, creator of Step Rebok). I think I'll really like this tape. I've only done it once; which was tonight. The cuing is great, the music is loud enough and the instructor keeps to the beat. There are no fancy dance moves or complex choreography (a total plus for me!). The entire 60 minutes uses only about 8-10 different step moves. But, let me tell you, it's not easy. I sweat my ass of tonight! It is the most challenging step video I've done. A good buy!

The second change is that I've started doing Yoga. I find it to be a good workout, albeit a different workout than either cardio or weight training. Nathan, the owner of the studio where I train, said it would be a good compliment to what I was already doing; as an alternate to cardio. I sweat and get sore muscles but I never get out of breath. Also, contrary to my cardio and lifting, I find it very soothing and relaxing. Cardio, especially, gets me hyped up and it takes me a while to simmer down. I plan to keep doing yoga at least 1 day a week.

So, having said that, I don't think a different step tape (which I do once a week) plus yoga (which replaced one of my cardio days) would make me drop 5.4 pounds in one week! I'm not complaining. I'm just confused. I was talking with one of the personal trainers at Premier (not my trainer) while I was waiting for my yoga class to start. She said that sometimes when your body gets itself off a plateau, it leaps off. I guess that's what happened to me. I am not planning or expecting to see a repeat performance. I'd be very happy with my 'standard' 1 to 1.5 pound loss per week.

-5.4 pounds for the week;
-5.4 for the milestone;
-77.8 total

Exceeded exercise goal
3 weight training (60 min/ea)
1 yoga (60 min)
2 cardio days (45 min/ea)

Until later . . .

Think Smart. Eat Well. Move More.
